Got myself well organised here. I put a few posts on a thumb drive so I had enough for the week I am away. Nice pics and a few ideas then forgot the thumb drive. they are just too small these days. PC running Vista in Thai so I'll just do a bit of a diary entry.
Arrived in Bangkok at the same time as half the population of Bangok returned from New Year Holidays. What absolute Chaos at Morchit. The bus station was full and the bus had to wait in a traffic jam for half hour just to get in an unload us. Scrummage at taxi rank with thousands of passengers and only a handful of taxis.
This was 4:30 in a morning and it was as busy as Wembley are on cup final day. This is no exaggeration, I was at the Leeds United v Aston Villa cup final in 1996 and other than saying about how crowded it was, I'll leave it at that. OK we lost.
Made up for lost time as apparantly the taxi drivers name was Somchai Mansell-Schumacher from the way he hurtled across Bangkok. It was a drive worthy of a reply on the old playstation and am sure he must have thought he would get another life if he pranged it. Gave him a tip as he had great music on in the car. Real Thai mor Lam as he was an Isaan man. Safely delivered to Soi Yen Agaat.
Soi Yen Agaat, or Road Cold Weather is a narrow quiet looking road if you arrive in the daytime. Don't be fooled though as it is a major rat run at rush hours and the Police even make the traffic flow one way, so it really can fly past the shop. Thats the breakfast and most passing trade out the window as only a madman would attempt to brake and squeeze a car into our narrow block of about 20 townhouses.
When I have to pull in here I am treated to a fanfare of horns, one and two in finger salutes and death stares from all the motorbikes who don't actually believe that if your brake lights come on you are slowing down and if your left indicator is on, you might actually be turning left. Oh what fun. Even worse getting out even with the security guard waving a flashing stick and whistling at them to stop. Really is who dares wins.
It's not cold there either, it's Bangkok after all and baking hot even in the cool season. An elderly lady told me it was named Cold Weather as before all the development in that part of Bangkok, it was covered by trees and the trees provided nice shade for anyone passing through. There is no footpath now so it tends to keep us cooped up all day other than the odd trip to 7/11.
The building is 5 storeys high and has a roof garden with fantastic views of the City at night. This is the second time I have lived in Bangkok and as before, I love nothing more than sitting on the roof looking at the City lights endless rows of skyscrapers that is Sathorn District.... The main business district.
Wish you were here! |
